Construction Update

Posted by:

The construction is moving super fast now. I can see daily changes and if I don’t visit the site every day, I’ll miss the progress. I’m trying to document each stage for future reference and so everyone can experience it too. I’m also shooting weekly updates and posting them to YouTube and the SJBC website. Here’s a link to the latest update for your convenience https://youtu.be/8ms5YRqg-uc
If you’ve walked by the Annex lately, you’ll see that we’ve dug up the ...

President’s article for May, 2016

Safer, cooler, more convenient and more efficient. That’s how I would summarize our retrofitted and remodeled gym when it reopens in June.
Recently the members of the board of directors toured the construction site. Todd Tsudama, who has been spearheading the project, pointed out a long series of improvements and new features in the building. They will make the building more user-friendly and comfortable. I think everyone in the Sangha and the wider community will be pleased.

More than a meeting

G Sakamoto

This year our National Council Meeting was convened in Visalia. For several years the Institute of Buddhist Studies and the Center for Buddhist Education have been presenting symposia in conjunction with the Council meeting. This year the subject was “Buddhism and Agriculture” a topic relevant to the location of the meeting, current environmental concerns and the influence of agricultural communities on the development of the early Shinshu sangha. One of the presenters was Professor Eisho Nasu of Ryukoku University. ...

It may seem odd to say that it is relatively new when it has been observed for over a hundred years, but in the context of the history of our tradition and the fact that though it ...

President’s Message

As I have met with members of many temple organizations in the past month, I’ve been impressed with their friendliness, dedication and the work they do to help not only the Betsuin, but with the community at large. We’re fortunate to have so many people who practice dana, selfless giving.
We have annual awards recognizing our volunteers. I also wanted to highlight some groups and individuals who give their time generously to making a positive impact.
We featured some of ...

Annex Renovation project update March 2016

The project is moving full steam ahead and have completed 90% of the demo and have started to the rebuild. The Kitchen and pantry floor have been poured. New drains, water lines, fire sprinklers, gas and electrical have been installed. In fact, we’re going to provide 4 outlets for the work island in the middle of the Kitchen. This should help clear the counters of any appliances during food prep.

The Air Conditioning ducting is being installed in the gym (see ...

Generations

The Generations Campaign is nearing the end of the beginning.

I say that because the gym/multipurpose room/kitchen retrofit and remodel is just the first step of a plan to help ensure the long-term future of the temple and the Sangha. As we complete the initial phase, we must keep an eye toward the equally important second phase of Generations: A new building across from the Hondo that will be the home of a wide variety of activities such as Lotus Pre-School, ...
