All deadlines for 2004 scholarships have now expired.
There are many scholarships available to graduating High School seniors and to continuing college and trade school students. Many scholarships go unawarded simply because no one applies for them. There are several scholarship opportunities noted on this page (see index at left), but this is certainly not an exhaustive list. San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin Scholarships * San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin Scholarship These scholarships are offered to San Jose Betsuin graduating seniors whose families are current members of the San Jose Betsuin for a minimum of one year. Use the application above to apply for any and all of the following 7 scholarships. Applications must be received by 5:00pm Wednesday March 31, 2004. Cover Letter (Word doc) and Application (Word doc) San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin Scholarship The San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin Scholarship is offered to outstanding graduating high school seniors. Candidates are evaluated on the basis of SJ Temple participation, academic achievement, participation in school, community activities and work experience. Ray and Lucy Matsumoto Scholarship Ray and Lucy Matsumoto have established a Betsuin Scholarship to honor a graduating senior who is planning on entering a trade school, business school or junior college. This high school senior would reflect the changing challenges that face the high school senior in today's environment. With this scholarship, the Matsumoto's hope to promote the importance of a vocational education. James Takeo Hashimoto Memorial Scholarship The Hashimoto family has established a scholarship to be awarded to a graduating high school senior in memory of the late James Takeo Hashimoto, an active supporter of the San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin. The recipient of this award is a Buddhist youth who subscribes to the Bodhisatva ideal and who actively participates in San Jose Bestuin sponsored youth programs. San Jose Buddhist Church Adult Buddhist Association (ABA) Scholarship The San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin Adult Buddhist Association, in recognition, of the value of education and especially for the young people of our Sangha, have established this scholarship. The graduating high school senior has attained academic achievements, in addition to their support of Temple and community activities. Masato and Chieno Kumada Memorial Scholarship The family of Masato and Chieno Kumada has endowed an annual scholarship in memory of their parents who believed in the importance of education. The family hopes this scholarship will provide some assistance and encouragement to a graduating high school senior in their pursuit of a higher education. The recipient is recognized for their academic achievement and participation in temple activities. Phil Matsumura Memorial Scholarship The family of Phil Matsumura established this scholarship in order to recognize the academic achievements of an outstanding Betsuin Jr. YBA member. The student awarded this scholarship has shown a commitment to the values of the Buddhadharma and academic excellence. Ben and Kimie Sanematsu Memorial Scholarship Ben Sanematsu initially endowed this annual college scholarship in memory of his wife, Kimie Yanagawa Sanematsu, a dedicated educator for twenty-five years. An active Betsuin member and successful undergraduate student is awarded this college scholarship. The award has now been changed to honor both Ben and Kimie.
WYBL offers two $500 scholarships. Application deadline is March 20, 2004. The scholarships will be awarded at the April WYBL Conference. Eligibility Requirements WYBL Scholarship Application Process: In addition to filling out the questions on the application sheet, please submit a two-paged, typed, double-spaced essay on the following topic:"Please share how the Teachings of the Dharma and/or YBA have had a positive impact on your life." Saratoga Sister City is accepting applications for the 2004 Gomersall Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to ANYONE of ANY AGE who is interested in furthering knowledge of ANY aspect of Japanese culture. Established in memory of former Saratoga Sister City president Ed Gomersall, the scholarship was established to help those interested in Japanese culture and in pursuing studies that help build U.S.-Japan relations. Detail Information and Instructions Note: Early deadline - March 1, 2004 The 2004 National JACL and West Valley Japanese-American Citizen League (WVJACL) Scholarship Programs offer scholarships to entering freshmen (high school seniors planning to enroll at an accredited undergraduate college), undergraduates (for current, not entering students), graduates or law school students entering in the Fall of 2004. The National JACL awards over $60,000 annually to qualified students nationwide. In addition, the WVJACL will distribute a total of $5,000 in the following categories for 2004. a).Entering Freshman (high school seniors planning to enroll at an accredited
undergraduate college) Applications must be mailed and postmarked by March 1, 2004. Note: Early deadline - March 1, 2004 There is also several offered by the SAN JOSE JACL Public high school students should be able to obtain a copy of the application from their counselors. Also, though San Jose JACL uses a slightly different application, you may submit your application to SJJACL using the National JACL form which can be found at: http://www.jacl.org/scholarships.html. Applications must be mailed and postmarked by March 1, 2004. * ED KAWAZOE & HELEN TAO MEMORIAL FUND The Ed Iwasaki Memorial Fund (EIMF) has been awarding scholarships for several years now in memory of Ed Iwasaki. This year, for the first time, the EIMF has joined with three other scholarship funds to create a single application process. A brief description of each scholarship appears below. Application - Descriptions, Rules and Forms ED KAWAZOE & HELEN TAO MEMORIAL FUND Description: The Ed Kawazoe & Helen Tao Memorial Fund is a joint awards program of the Silicon Valley Asian Pacific American Democratic Club (SVAPADC) and Asian Americans for Community Involvement (AACI). The program honors and remembers the legacies of Ed Kawazoe and Helen Tao, both of whom were community activists and championed the rights of all communities facing the inequalities of oppression in an unjust society. ED IWASAKI MEMORIAL FUND (For Entering College Freshmen) Description: Ed Iwasaki's 20-year successful career at Apple Computer,
Inc., serving as the director of three divisions, ended with his sudden
death in 1999. Throughout his career, he encouraged and mentored young
adults and early career professionals to achieve merits to their highest
potential, utilizing their creativity, their leadership and participation
in professional, civic and community activities. To continue his legacy,
the Ed Iwasaki Memorial Endownment Fund was established. 2004 will serve
as the fifth year this fund will be awarding scholarships to deserving
graduating high school seniors to carry on Ed's legacy. JACRO SCHOLARSHIP Description: The Japanese American Community Resource Organization (JACRO)
was formed by the Japanese American Chamber of Commerce of Silicon Valley
to provide resources, support, and education for the Japanese American
community. The JACRO scholarship fund has been created to help encourage
young individuals to participate in the Japanese American community and
to assist in developing future leaders throughout our multi-faceted communities. VAPA SCHOLARSHIP Description: Vietnamese-American Professionals Alliance (VAPA), a non-profit
organization committed to supporting the community and providing a social
and professional network for Vietnamese-American professional in Silicon
Valley. Through the scholarship awards, VAPA hopes to instill in our future
leaders the same values of leadership and community involvement for which
VAPA stands. American
Association of University Women Annual Writing Contest - Sunday March 7, 2004 Offering San Jose-area, female students two $1,000 scholarships. To participate, eligible students must submit an application by February 26. Each participant will be required to attend a session on March 7, 2004 at the AAUW San Jose headquarters. At the session, each student will be required to write an essay on a subject to be announced at the event. Eligibility Requirements · High School Senior from one of the following districts · OR, a Junior College student who has completed 30 units
