The Spiritual Legacy of Shinran Alfred Bloom |
|
Today we walked. Mr. Yoshihiro Ito, who is repairing the San Jose Betsuins onaijin, was my guide and host. From Ohtani Hombyo, to Kiyomizu, through Maruyama Koen, Chioin the center of Jodo Shu, Rennyos birth place, Shorenin where Shinran was ordained and Nanzenji. Before we began our day of walking, Mr. Ito took to me Isaku ya, a store that specializes in making kesa. |
In the context of contemporary religious ferment and the diversity of spiritual alternatives appealing to modern people, it is important for us to reconsider Shinran's legacy for its contemporary relevance. Shinran's legacy was forged through through his long years of personal spiritual struggle and his activity as a teacher among the peasants of medieval Japan. Nevertheless, his heritage is living today and has important relevance for our time. | |
