Summer is right around the corner and so is Obon…..

June is such a fun time and month. You have High School and College Graduations, no school, vacations and the last day of Dharma school. Don’t get me wrong, I love coming to church but it’s nice to sleep in during the summer. It’s a time to recharge the batteries, spend time with the family and of course, help out at Obon. A big thanks to Jim McClure, all the chairs and committee members for making Obon happen. If you see him or anyone helping out, pls thank them as this is a huge responsibility and these good folks are taking time away from their opportunity to re-charge to help put together this huge event.
I wanted to follow up on a few items.
1) Fixing up the little cottage for “new minister acclimation”: The Bishop has asked us to host new ministers before they get deployed to new temples. We will help them get acclimated to the US, learn how to run a temple and give them time to learn how to be a minister. The Board approved $10K to fix up the little cottage to house the rotating ministers. We felt that as a Betsuin, this is our responsibility and have done this in the past. If anyone would like to help out with the cleanup, repairs or donate home furnishing, please contact Steve Onishi.
2) Kurasaki House-Some of you may have noticed some activity at the Kurasaki house. Steve Onishi (this is turning into the Steve O newsletter  ) and team have started to clean up the KH to use it for storage during the construction period. The house is in good shape and will reduce the amount of storage containers we have to rent. We were in there pulling out the rugs when Sako (misp) Kurasaki peaked in with some of her friends. She showed us her room and was telling us about the house and all the things they used to do as kids. Good times and memories were made here.
3) The Hiroshima event was a huge success. Thanks to Bob and Kathlyn Uenaka, Kevin Kitagawa and our resident party planner-Carol Tsuchiya for organizing this event. Hiroshima put on a great show, was very engaging and is ready to come back. They ended up playing 45 minutes longer, as they were having a great time. At the post-concert dinner, we mentioned that we’d love them to come back and play at our grand opening of the Annex/gym and they were interested. Let’s hope this happens.
I hope everyone gets a chance to relax and spend some time with family this month, as the summer will go by fast….it always does. Thanks for reading and please let me know if you have any questions.

Todd Tsunamis
