March Infrastructure update

Posted by:

I’m very pleased to announce that we will start the Annex Renovation this year!!! We have risen $3M dollars to date which puts us at 75% towards our ‘current’ goal but more on that later. We were able to achieve this milestone with the generous $500K donation from the Takeo and Miyoko Yuki Family donation. As I’ve mentioned in the past, I’m very humbled with the Generosity of our Sangha. We must continue to raise money so we can ...

It’s time for March Madness!!

Thanks to everyone for coming out to our First Annual Super Bowl party. We had over 100 people and raised over $4K. Thanks to the Super Bowl planning committee, raffle donors and helpers. Without you, we couldn’t have pulled this off. Many were very surprised at the quality of the video and sound. In fact, several groups want to use the AV equipment for their fundraising events. This was a win/win event for all. Our fundraising committee has already started ...

Welcome back to a new Church year!!

Posted by:

A little over a 100 years ago, the Issei came to America to create a new life for themselves and part of that life was the Church. Temples sprouted up like the cherry trees and strawberries they planted and cultivated. Like in Japan, the church was always the center of the community, a gathering place for celebrations, weddings, obons, festivals and funerals. In times of prejudice, it was one of the few places you were always welcomed. Through the good ...

Annex renovation project update

Posted by:

As I was watching all the Napa Earthquake coverage, it quickly took me back to the 89 Loma Prieta earthquake. I was sitting at my desk, we were in a temporary trailer as we were building an office right next door and the whole thing was rocking back and forth. As I ducked under my desk, I looked outside to see cars bouncing around then I turned my head to see monitors falling off my friends desk and a large ...

Phew!!!

That’s the first thing that came to mind as I started to write my monthly article. July just flew by. After 5 days of Obon construction, beef skewering and Annex renovation mtgs, I was already tired by time Sat rolled around but…..when I saw all the people who came to the temple, the Taiko groups, all the game and food booths in full swing, I got my 2nd wind. To top it off seeing 1336 dancers going around the ...

Renovation update Phase I (annex)

Posted by:

Thanks to Roy for manning the Generations Booth at Obon. We had many people come by to see the Phase I drawings and draft campus plans. We also had our very first Generations brochure. We handed out over a hundred of them and if you’re interested, pick one up in the office.
Unfortunately, we did not hit our $2.7M fundraising goal and per the proposal that the SJBC Board approved, we will postpone the project until 2015. While this is ...

Obon…Obon…its Festival time!!

Posted by:

Obon is right around the corner and everyone is gearing up for it. Every year, it amazes me how we transform the temple, feed thousands of people, put all the entertainment together and get everyone ready to dance in such a short time. I know there are hundreds of volunteers behind the scenes and many dedicated folks leading them. My very special thank you to Jim McClure for being the Obon Chair again, If it wasn’t for your leadership ...

Annex renovation Update-Design updates

Posted by:

Todd Tsudama

It has come to my attention that I have not done a good job of communicating what Phase I or the Annex Renovation is. The Phase I of the campus renovation includes the following:

  1. Seismic and safety updates-This is the first and foremost reason we are renovating the annex first. With the concrete wall construction, if there were a major earthquake AND if there was an event or service happening in the Annex, there’s a potential of injury. This does ...

Go Warriors and Sharks …

Todd Tsudama

May is one of my favorite times of the year. The weather is getting nicer (although we’ve been really lucky this year), the NBA and NHL Playoffs are in full swing and the Warriors and Sharks are playing well. As you can tell from my recent Dharma letters, I’m a big sports fan. I love watching sports and especially the playoffs. It’s no longer about the individual but the team. In fact, one night my boys and I were ...

March Madness…Welcome to the big Dance

Posted by:

With the NCAA Basketball tournament winding down, we’re finally down to the Final Four teams. It’s been a crazy run and I hope a few of your teams are still in it. This year, I picked Michigan to win it all and so far so good. As I was watching all the games, the announcers and coaches had a common message, ”Play hard today, like there’s no tomorrow!!” It made me think of Sensei Sakamoto’s Dharma message at a recent ...
