Construction Update

Posted by:

The construction is moving super fast now. I can see daily changes and if I don’t visit the site every day, I’ll miss the progress. I’m trying to document each stage for future reference and so everyone can experience it too. I’m also shooting weekly updates and posting them to YouTube and the SJBC website. Here’s a link to the latest update for your convenience https://youtu.be/8ms5YRqg-uc
If you’ve walked by the Annex lately, you’ll see that we’ve dug up the ...

President’s article for May, 2016

Safer, cooler, more convenient and more efficient. That’s how I would summarize our retrofitted and remodeled gym when it reopens in June.
Recently the members of the board of directors toured the construction site. Todd Tsudama, who has been spearheading the project, pointed out a long series of improvements and new features in the building. They will make the building more user-friendly and comfortable. I think everyone in the Sangha and the wider community will be pleased.
The project upgrades ...

President’s Message

As I have met with members of many temple organizations in the past month, I’ve been impressed with their friendliness, dedication and the work they do to help not only the Betsuin, but with the community at large. We’re fortunate to have so many people who practice dana, selfless giving.
We have annual awards recognizing our volunteers. I also wanted to highlight some groups and individuals who give their time generously to making a positive impact.
We featured some of ...

Generations

The Generations Campaign is nearing the end of the beginning.

I say that because the gym/multipurpose room/kitchen retrofit and remodel is just the first step of a plan to help ensure the long-term future of the temple and the Sangha. As we complete the initial phase, we must keep an eye toward the equally important second phase of Generations: A new building across from the Hondo that will be the home of a wide variety of activities such as Lotus Pre-School, ...

Happy New Year! And hello!

Posted by:

I’m the new temple president. I know many of you and hope to meet those I don’t know in the weeks and months to come.

I begin my term in the midst of one of the most exciting and at the same time challenging periods in the long history of the temple and its members.

After some 18 years of hoping, discussing and planning, last year we started the temple’s most ambitious building ...

It’s time to make your lifetime donation to the Generation’s Campaign and here’s the top 3 reasons why:
1. To help us provide a safe, accessible and nice gathering spot for your kids, grandkids, parents, cousins, friends….We have ALL been to some kind of event, dance, meeting, basketball game or service in the gym. Make that lifetime donation so it’ll be here for the next 50 years with air conditioning!
2. You can write off your Donation. With the end ...

Thank you and goodbye….Part deux (for you Hot Shots! Movie fans)

Well I guess this is it. It’s been a fun ride and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. For anyone who is thinking about joining the Board, please do. It’s not the Board of old, where the meetings last 4 hours and nothing gets decided. We shoot for a 2 hour meeting and have been trying to push minor decisions to the committee level so we can reserve the precious Board time for the Major decisions or items that ...

THE ANNEX RENOVATION PROJECT IS OFFICALLY STARTED!!!!!
A huge thanks to the infrastructure committee (Rev Sakamoto, Janice Doi, Steve Onishi and Mary Sasaki) for all the help and guidance that got us to this day. It has been a long haul for us and even longer for the Sangha. I understand this day has been 15+ years in the making but its finally happening.
The construction fences went up on 10/15, abatement is happening right now and the demo starts ...

Thank you and goodbye….Part 1

After 2 years of serving as your President, I will term out after December. I really didn’t realize this until recently but understand why these policies are put in place. As I was reminded of this policy, I had a flashback to my 6th grade history class and the term limit lesson. Funny how little memory bits are triggered and what is recalled….anyway, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Sangha members for being so friendly ...

Annex renovation update October 2015

We had a great month on the fundraising front and continue to average $75K/month. If we keep this pace up we will finish the Phase I campaign around $4.7M vs a $5M goal and therefore only have to use a small portion of the $1M line of credit. This is good news, as I understand how hard it is to keep up this pace. A big thanks to the Generations committee members (Janice Doi, Joyce Iwasaki, Kevin Kitagawa, Rev ...
