Happy February everyone!!!

Posted by:

January was sure a busy month. With all the New Year’s activities, traveling and eating, I thought Feb would be a good time to take a breath and settle into the New Year….boy was I wrong. We have the BCA national council mtg at the end of the month and need to gear up for that. Besides approving the national budget, there aren’t too many ‘big’ decisions this year. The BCA dues will stay around $107 per member which is ...

Mahaparinirvana: The Great, Ultimate Extinction

Our major service observed in February is Nirvana Day, the memorial for Siddartha, the Sakyamuni Buddha. The memorial date is generally accepted as being February 15, and we usually observe it on the closest Sunday to that date. This year, we are fortunate to be having our service on that date. We are also going to be fortunate in having Dr. Scott Mitchell from the IBS ...

Enlightenment is not the goal of Buddhism. To become Buddha is not the goal of Buddhism. Enlightenment and being Buddha are the characteristics of things as they are. To think of enlightenment as the goal would be like taking a prescription without knowing what its for. Shakyamuni was not trying to make things more difficult, Shakyamuni shared how to resolve the difficulties we cause and experience. Those difficulties result from my inability to see things just as they are, ...

Another New Year’s Eve Service

Last year, in an attempt to recreate the atmosphere of a temple at night before the availability of electricity or, even gaslight, we held our Joya-e, or New Year’s Eve service in the dark, using only candle light in the gejin Continue Reading →

Still Going

(Here’s something from August 1978. Most recently re-published in 1998. I’ve added comments this time around.)

It seems that a very necessary event in the life of a Jodo Shinshu practitioner is a time when the individual is inescapably and absolutely incapable of determining, that is knowing and directing, the future of his life. Until this occurs much of what is done is a vain pursuit of some preconceived notion of what Jodo Shinshu might be. If I am not ...

Annex Renovation Project Update-Nov

Posted by:

We have been meeting with our Architects to finalize design concepts and are on track to receive our final design drawings in late November, early December. These drawings will be the basis of the construction drawings that each sub-contractor will get. These drawings will also include potential ‘phase building’ in the event we do not hit our $3.8M goal. For example, if we only raise $3.3M, we would not do the lobby (this is an Example). Here are the building ...

Re-read, Re-visit, Re-member

I had mentioned in a previous article that I often re-read books because I find things I had forgotten and/or discover things I had overlooked. Since then a number of people have mentioned that they do the same thing and that they, too, find things that they had forgotten or had overlooked in previous readings. To have such input is encouraging since it shows that a connection is ...
